Moving Home? Your Complete Stress-Free Moving Guide
Congratulations! Whether you've bought your dream home, landed a new job in a different city, or simply decided it's time for a fresh start — you're embarking on an exciting new chapter.
But let's be honest: moving house is stressful. Between coordinating dates, packing up your entire life, and settling into unfamiliar surroundings, it's easy to feel overwhelmed.
The good news? With the right preparation and a solid plan, you can dramatically reduce the stress and make your move as smooth as possible.
We've helped hundreds of families across Hertfordshire and beyond move home, and we've seen what works (and what doesn't). In this guide, we're sharing our tried-and-tested moving tips to help you stay organised, protect your belongings, and actually enjoy the process.
Let's dive in.
Start With Your Budget
Plan removal costs early — professional removals often cost less than a DIY move when you factor in time, risk, and hidden expenses.
Pack Smart
Use the right materials, fill boxes properly, label everything, and keep screws taped to furniture.
Declutter Before You Pack
Use the 6-month rule — if you haven't used it, don't pay to move it.
Sort the Admin Early
Redirect post, notify utilities, update your address — start 6-8 weeks before moving day.
Create a Floor Plan
Share a numbered room plan with your removal team so every box lands in the right room.
Protect Your Valuables
Passports, jewellery, medications, and important documents travel with you — never in the van.
Pack an Essentials Box
Kettle, toilet paper, phone chargers, bed sheets — mark it "OPEN FIRST" and keep it accessible.
Manage Kids and Pets
Arrange childcare or a pet-sitter for moving day, and update microchip details immediately.
Know Your New Home's Essentials
Locate the stopcock, fuse box, boiler, and meter on day one — before anything goes wrong.
Give Yourself Grace
Your house won't feel like home on day one. That's completely normal. Be kind to yourself.
Start With Your Budget — Don't Underestimate Removal Costs
When you're budgeting for a house move, it's easy to focus on the big-ticket items: stamp duty, solicitor fees, estate agent commissions, surveys, and renovations.
But here's what many people forget: the actual cost of moving your belongings.
Why Professional Removals Are Worth It
Yes, hiring a removal company costs money. But attempting a large move yourself — borrowing a van, recruiting reluctant friends, making multiple trips — often ends up being:
- More expensive (van hire, fuel, time off work, pizza and beer for helpers)
- More stressful (coordinating everyone, lifting heavy furniture without proper equipment)
- Riskier (damaged furniture, scratched walls, back injuries)
What Does It Actually Cost?
| Move Type | Typical Cost |
|---|---|
| 2–3 bedroom house, local (up to 10 miles) | £400–£650 |
| 4-bedroom house, local | £800–£1,050 |
| Professional packing service (add-on) | £250–£350 |
Pro tip: Get quotes from at least three removal companies. Ask about insurance, what's included, and whether there are extra charges for stairs, parking restrictions, or awkward access.

Where are you moving?
Pack Smart — Protect What Matters
Packing is where most moves go wrong. Rushed packing = broken belongings, lost items, and chaos when you unpack.
Invest in Proper Packing Materials
- Sturdy cardboard boxes (not flimsy supermarket ones that collapse)
- Bubble wrap for fragile items
- Packing paper or tissue paper for dishes and glassware
- Strong packing tape (cheap tape splits open mid-move)
- Permanent markers for labelling
The Golden Rules of Packing
Rule 1: Fill boxes completely
Half-empty boxes allow items to shift and break during transit. Use cushioning material to fill gaps — even scrunched-up newspaper works.
Rule 2: Heavy items in small boxes, light items in large boxes
Books and kitchenware go in small boxes. Bedding and pillows go in large boxes.
Rule 3: Label EVERYTHING
Write the room AND a brief contents list on each box. Not just "Kitchen" — "Kitchen – Pots & Pans (Heavy)". Trust us, Future You will thank Present You.
Rule 4: Keep screws and fittings together
When dismantling furniture, tape screws and bolts directly to the furniture piece in a small bag. Nothing's worse than losing the fixings for your bed frame at 9 PM on moving day.
Special Items That Need Extra Care
- Mirrors and picture frames: Wrap in bubble wrap, sandwich between cardboard. Mark "FRAGILE – THIS WAY UP."
- Electronics: Photograph cable connections before unplugging. Use original boxes where possible.
- Glassware and china: Wrap each item individually, place vertically (not stacked flat), fill gaps with packing paper.
Declutter BEFORE You Pack
The average UK household has £3,500 worth of unwanted items sitting in cupboards and lofts. Moving house is the perfect opportunity to declutter. Why pay to move things you don't want?
The 6-Month Rule
If you haven't used something in the last six months (and it's not seasonal), you probably don't need it. Ask yourself: Will I realistically use this in my new home? Does it have sentimental value? If not — it's time to let it go.
What to Do With Unwanted Items
- Sell: Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Gumtree, or a car boot sale
- Donate: Charity shops, local schools, community centres
- Recycle: Your local council's recycling centre
- Bin: As a last resort for broken or unsalvageable items
Pro tip: Start decluttering at least 4 weeks before your move. Going room by room, one weekend at a time, is much less overwhelming than trying to do it all in the final week.
Sort the Admin Early
Moving house comes with a mountain of administrative tasks. Tackle these early to avoid last-minute panic.
6–8 Weeks Before Moving
- Notify your mortgage lender and home insurance provider
- Set up a mail redirect with Royal Mail (from £39.99 for 3 months)
- Register with a GP and dentist in your new area
- Transfer your kids to a new school (if applicable)
- Book time off work for moving day and the day after
2–4 Weeks Before Moving
- Notify utility companies of your moving date (gas, electric, water)
- Set up utilities at your new address
- Update DVLA, car insurance, electoral register, banks, TV Licensing, council tax, and subscriptions
1 Week Before Moving
- Confirm details with your removal company
- Do a final meter reading at your current property
- Pack your essentials box (see Tip 7)
Create a Floor Plan for Your New Home
Before moving day, create a simple floor plan of your new home and share it with your removal team. Without a plan, removal teams will ask "where does this go?" for every single box.
How to Do It
- Visit your new property before moving day (or use the estate agent's floor plan)
- Sketch out which room will be what (bedroom 1, bedroom 2, study, etc.)
- Number each room and create matching labels for your boxes
- Print copies for yourself and your removers
Example labelling:
Room 1 = Master Bedroom → label boxes "1-A: Master Bedroom – Bedding"
Room 2 = Kids' Bedroom → label boxes "2-A: Kids' Room – Toys"

Protect Your Valuables
Some things should never go in the removal van. Pack these in a personal bag or small case that travels in your car with you.
- Important documents: Passports, birth certificates, marriage certificates, house deeds, insurance policies
- Valuables: Jewellery, watches, heirlooms, expensive electronics
- Cash and cards: Credit cards, bank cards, cash
- Medications: Prescription medicines, first aid kit
- Keys: House keys, car keys (keep spares separate)
Even with fully insured removal companies, some items are irreplaceable. And if there's a delay or issue with the van, you'll still have access to your essentials.
Pack an ‘Essentials Box’ for Day One
It's 8 PM on moving day. You're exhausted. The house is full of boxes. And you can't find the kettle, toilet paper, or phone chargers. Avoid this nightmare by packing a “first night” essentials box.
Kitchen
- Kettle
- Tea, coffee, sugar, milk
- Mugs, plates, cutlery
- Snacks or a ready meal
Bathroom
- Toilet paper (priority #1!)
- Hand soap, shower gel, shampoo
- Towels
- Toothbrushes and toothpaste
- Any medications
Bedroom
- Bed sheets, pillows, duvet
- Pyjamas, change of clothes
- Phone chargers
Miscellaneous
- Bin bags
- Light bulbs
- Basic toolkit
- Cleaning supplies
Pro tip: Mark this box “OPEN FIRST” in bright red marker and keep it with you — not buried in the van.
Managing Kids and Pets on Moving Day
Moving day is chaotic. Add stressed children and confused pets into the mix, and it's a recipe for disaster.
For Kids
Best option: arrange for them to spend the day with grandparents, friends, or at a childminder. If that's not possible, set up a “safe zone” in one room with toys, snacks, and a tablet.
For Pets
- Keep them in one room on moving day with a sign: "PET INSIDE – DO NOT OPEN"
- Set up a familiar space in your new home with their bed, toys, and food bowls
- Update their microchip details and ID tag with your new address immediately
- For cats: keep them indoors for at least 2 weeks while they adjust
Know Your New Home's Essentials
Don't wait until there's a problem to figure out where things are. On day one, locate:
- The water stopcock — in case of a leak or burst pipe
- The fuse box / consumer unit — in case you trip a circuit
- The boiler and thermostat — so you don't freeze on your first night
- The gas meter — for readings and emergencies
Take photos and save them in a folder on your phone labelled “House.” Then test taps, toilets, heating, light switches, smoke alarms, and carbon monoxide detectors.
Give Yourself Grace
Your new house won't feel like home on day one. It'll take weeks to unpack fully. Months to get settled. Maybe a year before it truly feels like “yours.” And that's completely normal.
Most importantly: be kind to yourself. Moving is one of life's most stressful events. It's okay to feel overwhelmed.
